Starbucks Indiranagar, Bengaluru
Situated in the 'Garden City of India', the ideation of this artwork revolved mostly around depicting the green cover of Bengaluru while also celebrating the origins of Starbucks' coffee with local crafts.
A coffee jungle, the inspiration for the mural design comes from different art and crafts of Karnataka, which includes traditional mural paintings and Channapata wood carved paintings. The Sumatran Tigers, whose design is inspired from the tiger motifs in the craft of Leather Puppetry of Karnataka, represent the regions of Sumatra where Starbucks' coffee is harvested.
The tigers are crafted in cotton fabric with details done in applique technique with intricate embroidery. The coffee branches in white come straight out of a Starbucks reserve. The mural at the back in bright colors and spontaneous organic shapes deliberately break away from the rigidity of the cityscape outside. This contemporary co-creation keeps the essence of local crafts alive, while allowing collaborations to open new markets.
