A Contemporary Revival of a Century-Old Assam Tea Café - The Tea Story

Brief

This project involved the transformation of a historic Assam-type bungalow into a modern yet culturally rooted tea café, blending heritage, sustainability, and contemporary aesthetics. The redesign aimed to enhance the space’s functionality while respecting its history, using natural materials, artisanal elements, and handcrafted art pieces to create an inviting and immersive experience.

Key Spaces & Design Elements

 Tea Bar & Reception Area

  • Preserved existing wooden flooring, complemented by bamboo and cane furniture.

  • Introduced backlit branding and warm lighting to create a cozy entrance.

 Main Seating Area (1st Floor)

  • Polished existing wood flooring, complemented by green plants and blue-toned art.

  • Dramatic yet minimal light fixtures to create a relaxed ambiance.

 Staircase & Wall Art

  • Curated a tea-inspired mural, designed and hand-painted by me, adding a unique storytelling element to the space.

  • Cyanotype Artworks, framed in handcrafted wooden frames, reinforcing the connection between nature and tradition.

 Outdoor Areas

  • Fluted wooden ceiling panels to add texture while maintaining an open, airy feel.

  • Tea landscape artwork and curated installations along the arches to frame the outdoor experience.

  • Green dividers and pebbled flooring for a softer, natural transition between spaces.

The redesign of Tea Story successfully bridges the gap between the past and present, offering a heritage-rich yet contemporary space for tea lovers. The space now tells a story of legacy, craftsmanship, and artistic expression, ensuring that the essence of Assam’s tea culture is preserved while making it relevant for today’s audience.
